Storied folk traditionalist Rosalie Sorrels was inspired to pay tribute to folk singer/activist/poet Utah Phillips upon his 2008 death. The result, STRANGERS, is a mournful but moving rendition of more than 20 of Phillips's songs and stories. Spoken-word snippets like "I Feel Drunk All The Time" are pure heartbreak, but slide-guitar slow-drippers such as "He Comes Like Rain" and "The Goodnight Loving Trail" help illustrate Sorrels's implicit point that everyone from Bob Dylan and Janis Joplin to Ani DiFranco and Rosanne Cash owes a debt to Phillips's seminal work.
